Reading platinum marks
Under the FTC Jewelry Guides, an unqualified “Platinum” description requires at least 950 parts per thousand platinum. Lower-platinum alloys need fuller composition disclosure. A stamp is a clue, not proof of purity; professional XRF can screen surface composition, while plated or mixed items may need confirmatory assay.
Use platinum-bearing weight only
Exclude stones and non-platinum parts from the weight. The UK's official hallmarking guidance shows why mixed precious-metal articles and non-precious parts need separate treatment. If net metal weight cannot be measured without damage, get a professional assessment rather than guessing.
Compare the buyer's net dollars
Ask for a written dollar quote tied to the tested purity, weight, price timestamp, deductions, shipping, insurance, and settlement timing. Enter the quote and your costs here; the effective percentage of melt is a comparison result, not an assumed buyer-type range.
Catalytic converters are a different market
Converters contain a substrate and a variable mix of platinum-group metals, so gross converter weight cannot be entered as platinum weight. The U.S. Department of Energy's PGM supply-chain report describes that multi-metal recovery process. Use a specialist converter assessment instead.
