Check the hallmark first
“925” or “Sterling” means 92.5% silver; “900” or pre-1965 US dimes, quarters and halves are 90%; “800”/“835” appear on continental European pieces. Silverplate (EPNS, “silver on copper”, A1, triple-plate) carries only a microscopic silver layer — plate has no melt value and buyers pay nothing for it.
The junk-silver shortcut
For pre-1965 US coinage: $1.00 of face value — any mix of dimes, quarters, halves — contains 0.715 ozt of pure silver. Face value × 0.715 × spot = melt value. Common-date circulated coins are also the easiest silver to sell at a strong percentage, because dealers resell them without refining.
Why silver offers are lower than gold offers
A pound of sterling is worth two orders of magnitude less than a pound of 14K gold but takes the same testing, sorting, shipping and refining effort. That fixed cost is a bigger slice of a silver lot — so every buyer's percentage is lower, and consolidating into one larger lot measurably improves the offer.
Frequently asked questions
how much is sterling silver worth per oz
Sterling silver is worth 92.5% of the live silver spot price per troy ounce in melt value. Use this calculator with one troy ounce and .925 purity, then compare an actual buyer percentage.
is sterling silver worth any money
Yes, genuine sterling silver is worth money by weight because it contains 92.5% silver. Silver-plated objects contain only a thin surface layer and usually have no meaningful scrap-metal value.
how much is sterling silver worth at a pawn shop
Pawn shops do not publish one reliable industry-wide percentage of sterling melt value. Ask for a written dollar quote, convert it to a percentage of the melt result, and compare it with other buyers on identical terms.
how much is sterling silver worth per pound
One pound of sterling silver has a melt value of 453.592 ÷ 31.1035 × 0.925 × the live silver spot price. Select pounds in this calculator to estimate flatware or other larger lots at home.
what is the difference between sterling silver and silver plated in terms of value
Sterling silver is 92.5% silver by weight, while silver plate is base metal with only a microscopic silver coating. Sterling has calculable melt value; plate is generally worth nothing as scrap metal.
