Formula

For each metal: net alloy grams × reported percentage ÷ 100 ÷ 31.1034768 × that metal's price per troy ounce. Add the four component values only after applying each percentage to the same measured alloy weight. Percentages above 100 in total are rejected.

Worked arithmetic example

This is an arithmetic example, not a typical-alloy claim: a 10-gram documented alloy reports 40% gold, 10% silver, 5% platinum, and 5% palladium. The remaining 40% is unvalued here.

Use documented bulk percentages

A stamp can state one metal's fineness but does not reveal every alloy component. Use a manufacturer or laboratory document, refiner settlement, or qualified professional's bulk analysis. Surface screening, color, age, magnet response, or a trade category cannot supply missing percentages.

What the total excludes

Subtract stones, ceramic, cement, blades, filler, and other non-alloy material before entering weight. The unvalued remainder can contain base metals or other elements. The result excludes recovery yield, assay confirmation, refining, shipping, fees, buyer margin, and collectible or finished-item value.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate value from a precious-metal assay?

Multiply the net alloy weight by each reported metal percentage, convert each pure-metal weight to troy ounces, multiply by that metal's reference price, and add the component values.

Can assay percentages add up to more than 100 percent?

No valid composition can exceed 100 percent. This calculator stops the total when entered percentages exceed 100 and shows the amount that must be corrected.

What does the unvalued remainder mean?

The remainder is the portion not assigned to gold, silver, platinum, or palladium. It can include base metals, other reported elements, or rounding and receives no value here.

Can I use a hallmark instead of an assay?

A complete hallmark can identify a stated fineness for one metal, but it does not establish a full multi-metal composition. Use percentages from a manufacturer document, laboratory, refiner, or qualified professional.

Can this calculator value a dental alloy?

Yes, when a reliable report gives net alloy weight and separate bulk percentages for the supported metals. Do not infer those percentages from color, age, or an alloy class.

Will a buyer pay the full assay value?

A buyer may pay less because assay confirmation, recovery, refining, lot size, shipping, fees, and margin affect net proceeds. Compare the entered quote and fees against the same component-value benchmark.
