Start with the complete mark, not the color
The FTC consumer guide identifies Sterling, Sterling Silver, and 925 with 92.5% silver. Under 16 CFR § 23.5, a lone unqualified Silver mark does not establish .925; an accurate fineness must immediately precede that term. Silver plate is only a silver layer over base metal. A mark is evidence, not an assay; test uncertain or valuable pieces without damaging them.
Build a net sterling-bearing weight
