Where 10K gold appears
10K uses more alloy than higher karats, making it relatively hard-wearing and common in lower-cost US jewelry. The extra alloy changes color and durability but contributes no gold melt value.
416, 417, and exact 10K
Ten parts out of 24 equals 0.4167 when rounded to four decimals. A 416 or 417 stamp states a nearby fineness in thousandths; use the stamped or assayed fineness when known instead of silently treating all three as identical.
Solid versus hollow 10K
Solid does not mean pure: a solid 10K item is still about 41.67% gold. Hollow construction can make a large chain surprisingly light, so melt value follows scale weight, verified fineness, and excluded stones or non-gold parts—not visual size.
