Where 24K gold appears
24K describes fine gold used in bullion and some jewelry. Trade products are normally specified as .999 or .9999 rather than mathematically perfect 1.000 purity; use the stated fineness.
999 and 9999 are close, but not identical
.999 states 99.9% gold; .9999 states 99.99%. At equal gross weight, .9999 contains about 0.09% more gold. Use the product's stated fineness instead of rounding every 24K item to mathematically pure gold.
Bullion identity can matter more than melt alone
The U.S. Mint identifies the Gold Buffalo as a one-ounce .9999 fine 24K coin. Recognized bars and coins can carry resale value above melt; verify brand, weight, serial or assay packaging, and authenticity before accepting a scrap-only quote.
