Gold price per pennyweight formula
Pure-gold value per pennyweight equals the visible gold price per troy ounce ÷ 20. For karat gold, multiply that result by the selected purity; for example, 14K uses 0.5833 on this page.
Pennyweight and DWT are the same unit
The NIST precious-metals conversion table defines 1 pennyweight (dwt) as 24 grains, 1/20 troy ounce, or 1.55517384 grams. The calculator uses that NIST conversion.
Do not confuse troy and standard ounces
Twenty pennyweights equal one 31.1035-gram troy ounce. A standard kitchen-scale ounce is 28.3495 grams and is not 20 dwt, so select the unit shown on the scale before calculating.
Worked 14K example and quote check
Ten pennyweights of 14K gold have a fallback melt value of about $1,179.35: 10 ÷ 20 × 0.5833 × $4,043.70. A hypothetical $1,000 quote with $25 in fees nets $975, or about 82.7% of that benchmark; use the calculator for an actual quote because no universal buyer payout applies.
